RELEASE

Dragon Boats Start Paddling Down the Tennessee River at 8 AM Saturday

August 22, 2017 – The third annual Tennessee Clean Water Network Dragon Boat Race will be held Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, starting at 8 AM at Volunteer Landing in downtown Knoxville.

“Watching the teams paddle down the Tennessee River in authentic 46-foot dragon boats is great family fun,” said TCWN Executive Director Renee Hoyos. “The event is free and open to the public, so we encourage everyone to come on down to the river on Saturday morning.”

Hoyos said that the TCWN Dragon Boat Race raises funds for the organization’s mission of protecting the state’s water resources through education, advocacy and litigation. “For example, TCWN has launched an educational program in several Tennessee counties to encourage students to drink more water and drink less sugary beverages to help lower the rates of obesity and diabetes in the state.”

In dragon boat racing, teams of 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a steersperson race against the clock in authentic Hong Kong-style 46-foot-long dragon boats to qualify for the finals. In the finals, the teams race against each other for the winner’s Gold Cup. All ages, skill levels and abilities can participate making it one of the ultimate team building sports.
