Site EPA recently announced a new
on-line resource designed to facilitate and support smart growth activities.
The site provides information on the environmental benefits of smart growth,
government influence on development patterns, the federal role, sample
smart growth policies, funding sources, networking opportunities, and

6. REPORT RELEASED: Protecting and Restoring America's Watersheds:
Status, Trends and Initiatives in Watershed Management
This new interagency report published by EPA's Office of Water describes
watershed-related activities - projects, programs, and coordination
efforts- implemented in the recent past. It explores the successes
of selected case studies and evaluates programs and partnerships representative
of the larger national efforts underway to move stakeholders toward a
watershed management approach. To order copies, call the National

5. EPA Releases 2000 Update on Nation's Fish Advisories:
EPA has released its annual update of the National Listing of Fish and
Wildlife Advisories. The 2000 list indicates a 7% rise in fish consumption
advisories over 1999. This increase generally reflects more extensive
coverage by state monitoring programs, as well as improvements in data
collection and monitoring methods. Approximately 23% of the Nation's
lake acreage and 325,500 river miles were under fish consumption advisories
during all or part of 2000. All Great Lakes (which are not included
in the lake acreage figure) and their connecting waters were also under
advisory, as were 71% of coastal waters, including 20 National Estuary

EPA Releases New Watershed Training Brochure
EPA's Watershed Academy has just published an updated EPA Watershed Training
Opportunities brochure. It includes descriptions of the Watershed
Academy's training courses, publications, watershed management facilitation
services, and web-based training, as well as other EPA training courses
and educational materials. This booklet updates an earlier version,
published in 1998.

new EPA web site is now available for students and teachers looking for
information on water-related environmental education programs. The site
hosts a dizzying array of teacher resources including several excellent
programs that teachers can utilize to introduce students to water conservation.
The site also hosts information from several other federal agencies.
