Frickin’ frackin!

It’s about the deplorable practice of natural gas fracking that it highly polluting to ground and surface waters.  We’ve heard that oil and gas companies may want to start exploring on the Cumberland Plateau.  If you have concern, call over.

This is a little above our pay grade right now, but if there is a large community outcry and we can find some funding, we’ll work on it.

Dead zone predicted to be the size of New Jersey to accompany the oil spill in the Gulf

This week LSU and partners released their predictions for the size of the annual Gulf of Mexico Hypoxic Zone (aka “Dead Zone”).  The prediction:  7,776 square miles.  This area of nutrient rich, oxygen depleted water threatens human and animal health, yet our environmental impacts throughout the Mississippi River Basin cause the Dead Zone size to steadily increase.  We must reduce nutrient pollution in order to address this dangerous problem.  Check out the full press release about the prediction.

BP is, of course, taking a play from the TVA playbook.  Now they are refusing to release documents and videos.  We should see the aggressive defense firm showing up any day now.  Its too bad these corporations behave so badly to the public.

List of polluted Tennessee rivers is out!

Every two years, TDEC is required to complete a list of rivers and streams that are not meeting water quality standards.    To see if your stream meets water quality standards, go here.

New regulations on Coal Fly Ash

EPA announced today that it is releasing new regulations on coal fly ash. There are two proposals that will be released. The comment period is for 90 days starting from today.
