A step in the right direction against mountain top removal mining!
July 17th, 2009 by Dana WrightThe US Army Corps of Engineers issued a special public notice announcing the proposed suspension and modification of permits authorizing fill material in US waters. The intent is to (1) modify the permits to prohibit its use as permission to discharge dredge materials into our waters when related to surface coal mining activities and (2) suspend the permits while evaluating means to prohibit the permit use to authorize these discharges in relation to surface coal mining in the Appalachian Region. This is a significant step in the right direction to stop the destructive valley fills associatd with mountain top removal mining. Please send your comments to the USACOE as directed in the notice and let them know how important it is to stop permitting these destructive practices!
